Why Did My Sinus Lift Fail?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
A question I sometimes hear from new patients is, “Why did my sinus lift fail?” While sinus lifts are very safe and predictable, like any surgery, complications can happen. Understanding why a sinus lift may fail helps us plan better for the future and ensure your dental implants succeed.
The most common reason is a tear in the sinus membrane. During surgery, the membrane that lines the sinus is lifted to make space for the bone graft. If this membrane tears and does not heal properly, the bone graft may not stay in place or integrate with your natural bone.
Another possible reason is infection. Just like with any surgery, bacteria can sometimes enter the area and interfere with healing. Good oral hygiene and following post-op instructions carefully help reduce this risk.
A sinus lift can also fail if there is not enough blood supply to support the bone graft. Without proper healing, the graft material may not bond with your natural bone, leaving the area too weak for an implant. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, or other medical conditions can make this more likely.
Sometimes, the graft does not fail completely, but it does not create enough strong bone for implants. In these cases, a second sinus lift may be needed.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I take steps to lower these risks as much as possible. I use 3D imaging to plan surgery with precision, follow zero bone loss principles to protect the graft, and use custom healing abutments to preserve your gum and bone. My advanced training in implants and bone grafting allows me to manage even complex cases, and for comfort, we offer oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia with an MD anesthesiologist.
I also want to remind you that this is a no judgment office. Many patients come to me after a sinus lift or implant failed elsewhere, and that’s okay. My role is not to lecture—it’s to help you move forward safely.
So, why did your sinus lift fail? It could be from a membrane tear, infection, poor healing, or weak bone formation. The good news is that with the right techniques and planning, many patients can still move forward with successful implants. If you’ve had a failed sinus lift, schedule a consultation at Summerbrook Dental & Implants in Fort Worth. Together, we’ll create a plan to get you back on track to a strong, lasting smile.
