What’s Better, a Bridge or Implant?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

One of the most common questions patients ask me is, “What’s better, a bridge or an implant?” Both options can replace missing teeth, but they work in different ways and have different long-term results. The best choice depends on your health, budget, and goals for your smile.

A dental bridge is made up of a false tooth that is held in place by crowns on the teeth next to the gap. Bridges can usually be completed in a few weeks, and they often cost less than implants at the start. They restore your smile and chewing ability, but there are some drawbacks. To place a bridge, the healthy teeth on either side of the gap must be reshaped for crowns. Over time, bridges also do not prevent bone loss in the jaw since nothing replaces the missing tooth root.

A dental implant is different. It is a small post placed into the jawbone that acts like a natural tooth root. Once it heals, a crown is attached to it, creating a tooth that looks, feels, and functions like the real thing. Implants stand alone, meaning the teeth next to them do not have to be touched. Even more importantly, implants help preserve the jawbone and prevent the bone loss that happens when a tooth is missing. While implants cost more up front, they are designed to last decades and often save money over time.

At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use advanced techniques like zero bone loss principles, immediate implant placement, and custom healing abutments to make implants last longer and look more natural. For your comfort, we also offer oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia with an MD anesthesiologist.

I also want you to know that my office is a no judgment zone. Whether you’ve been missing a tooth for years or just lost one recently, I’m here to guide you—not to lecture you.

So, what’s better, a bridge or an implant? In most cases, implants are the stronger, healthier, and longer-lasting option. But every patient is different, and the best way to know is to schedule a consultation at Summerbrook Dental & Implants in Fort Worth. Together, we’ll design a plan that restores your smile, comfort, and confidence.
