What Is the Difference Between a Prosthodontist and a Cosmetic Dentist?

What Is the Difference Between a Prosthodontist and a Cosmetic Dentist?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

It’s a great question — and one we hear often from patients exploring restorative or cosmetic treatments. While prosthodontists and cosmetic dentists may offer some of the same services, the difference comes down to training, specialization, and the types of cases they typically handle.

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who completes three additional years of advanced education after dental school. Their focus is on restoring and replacing teeth, especially in complex cases. They often handle:

  • Full-mouth reconstructions

  • Dentures (including complex cases)

  • Dental implants and bridges

  • TMJ disorders

  • Traumatic injuries or birth defects affecting the mouth

A cosmetic dentist, on the other hand, is a general dentist who focuses on improving the appearance of your smile. This includes treatments like:

  • Veneers

  • Teeth whitening

  • Cosmetic bonding

  • Smile makeovers

  • Clear aligners

While cosmetic dentists do not go through a separate specialty program, many — like myself — choose to complete advanced training in cosmetic techniques, including smile design, facial aesthetics, and minimally invasive procedures.

At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I’ve completed extensive training in both cosmetic and surgical procedures, which means we can provide many of the same services you’d expect from a prosthodontist — including implants, bone grafting, sinus lifts, and full All-on-4 treatments — right here in one office.

And remember, our practice is a no-judgment zone. Whether you’re missing one tooth or many, or you’re simply looking to enhance your smile, we’ll meet you where you are — with kindness, clear options, and expert care.

So, the short version? Prosthodontists are dental specialists in tooth restoration, especially for complex cases. Cosmetic dentists are general dentists with a focus on smile aesthetics — and with the right training, they can deliver stunning, long-lasting results.
