What Is the Alternative to a Sinus Lift?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Many patients who need dental implants in the upper back jaw ask me, “What is the alternative to a sinus lift?” A sinus lift is a common procedure to add bone below the sinuses so implants can be placed securely. While it is safe and predictable, some patients want to know if there are other options.
One alternative is using short or angled implants. Traditional implants usually require a certain amount of bone height, but newer designs allow us to place shorter implants or angle them into areas with more natural bone. This can sometimes avoid the need for a sinus lift while still giving strong support for new teeth.
Another option is zygomatic implants. These are longer implants that anchor into the cheekbone, or zygoma, instead of the jawbone. Because the cheekbone is naturally dense, it provides excellent support when the upper jaw does not have enough bone. This procedure is more complex, but it allows many patients who would otherwise need a sinus lift to receive implants.
In some cases, we can also place implants at the time of extraction before bone is lost. This is called immediate placement, and it helps preserve both bone and gum tissue. At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use custom healing abutments and zero bone loss principles to protect the area and improve long-term results.
Of course, whether you need a sinus lift or an alternative depends on your unique situation. That’s why I use 3D imaging to carefully study your bone and design a safe, predictable plan. With my advanced training in implant dentistry and bone grafting, I can offer multiple solutions tailored to your needs.
I also want you to know that my office is a no judgment zone. Many patients feel nervous or even embarrassed about their dental health, but my role is to guide you—not to lecture you.
So, what is the alternative to a sinus lift? Options like short implants, angled implants, zygomatic implants, or immediate placement may work depending on your bone and health.
