What Is the 50-40-30 Rule in Dentistry?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Patients sometimes ask me, “What is the 50-40-30 rule in dentistry?” This rule does not have to do with insurance or cost. It is a cosmetic dentistry rule that helps us design front teeth that look natural and beautiful when you smile.
The 50-40-30 rule is about the contact areas between your upper front teeth. A contact area is the place where two teeth touch each other. When you look at a smile, you can see these as the small vertical zones between the teeth where the light changes.
For a pleasing smile, we want these contact areas to slowly get shorter as we move from the middle of your smile out toward the canine teeth. The guideline works like this:
-
The contact between the two front teeth (the central incisors) should be about 50% of the tooth length.
-
The contact between the front tooth and the next tooth (central and lateral incisor) should be about 40% of the tooth length.
-
The contact between the lateral incisor and the canine should be about 30% of the tooth length.
When we follow this 50-40-30 pattern, the spaces between the teeth look even and soft. It also helps reduce the chance of dark “black triangles” near the gums. The result is a smile that looks more youthful, full, and balanced, even if the patient has had crowns, veneers, or implant-supported teeth.
If the contact areas are too short, too long, or uneven, the smile can look older, too square, or “gappy.” That is why this rule is helpful when we plan cosmetic bonding, veneers, or full smile makeovers.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use esthetic rules like the 50-40-30 guideline along with photos, digital scans, and careful planning. These rules are tools, not strict laws. Every face and smile is different, so I always adjust the design to fit your features and your goals.
And remember, my office is a no judgment zone. Whether you have small gaps, worn edges, or older dental work you don’t love, I’m here to help you explore options in a comfortable, open way.
