What Is Not Considered Cosmetic Dentistry?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

When people hear the term cosmetic dentistry, they often think of smile makeovers, veneers, and teeth whitening — and they’re right! Cosmetic treatments are all about improving the look of your smile. But what about dental work that’s focused on your health, comfort, and function? That falls outside of cosmetic dentistry.

So, what isn’t considered cosmetic dentistry? Here are a few clear examples:

  • Fillings to treat cavities

  • Root canals to save infected teeth

  • Tooth extractions

  • Crowns placed to protect damaged teeth

  • Gum disease treatment

  • Dental cleanings and exams

  • X-rays and diagnostic imaging

  • Oral cancer screenings

These are all considered general or restorative dentistry, not cosmetic. The main difference is that these services are done to treat disease, stop pain, or restore basic function — not just to improve appearance.

For example, if we place a crown on a cracked tooth so you can chew comfortably again, that’s a restorative treatment. But if you ask for a crown to improve the shape or color of your tooth, it may also be considered cosmetic. Sometimes the line between cosmetic and non-cosmetic can blur a little, especially if a treatment does both — helps you function better and look better.

At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we do it all — and we do it in a no-judgment environment. Whether you’re here because something hurts, or because you want a brighter smile, we’ll guide you with care, skill, and honesty.

If you’re unsure whether a dental procedure is cosmetic or not, we’ll explain everything clearly, including what’s necessary, what’s optional, and what your insurance might cover. Our goal is always to help you feel confident, comfortable, and well cared for.
