What Is a Sinus Lift?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Many patients ask me, “What is a sinus lift?” A sinus lift is a type of bone grafting procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw, specifically in the area of the back teeth near the sinuses. This extra bone creates a strong foundation so that dental implants can be placed securely and last for many years.
When a tooth in the upper back jaw is lost, the bone in that area often shrinks over time. In some patients, the sinus cavity naturally sits very close to the roots of the upper teeth. If there isn’t enough bone, dental implants cannot be placed safely. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus membrane and places bone graft material beneath it. Over time, this bone fuses with your natural jawbone, giving implants the support they need.
The procedure is very safe and predictable when done by an experienced implant dentist. At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use 3D imaging to plan each case with precision. My advanced training in implant dentistry and bone grafting allows me to use modern techniques, such as zero bone loss principles, to protect your bone and gum tissue. This results in better healing and stronger long-term results.
During the surgery, your comfort is always a priority. We offer oral sedation, IV sedation, and even general anesthesia with an MD anesthesiologist so you can feel fully relaxed. Most patients report only mild swelling afterward and are surprised at how comfortable recovery is.
It’s also important to know that this is a no judgment office. Many patients come to me after struggling with missing teeth or dentures for years. My job is not to lecture—it’s to help you move forward with a safe, predictable plan that restores your smile.
So, what is a sinus lift? It is a procedure that builds up bone in the upper jaw so that dental implants can be placed securely. If you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone for implants, a sinus lift may be the key to finally getting a stable, natural-looking smile.
