What Is a Dental Bridge?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
One of the questions I often hear from patients is, “What is a dental bridge?” A dental bridge is a type of restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It quite literally “bridges the gap” where teeth are missing, restoring both function and appearance.
A traditional dental bridge is made up of three main parts. The pontic is the false tooth that fills the empty space. On either side of the pontic are dental crowns, which are placed over the healthy teeth next to the gap. These crowns act as anchors, holding the bridge firmly in place. Once the bridge is secured, it looks and functions like natural teeth.
Bridges are usually made from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal fused with porcelain. They are designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, so most people will not even notice you have one. A bridge can help you chew more comfortably, improve your speech, and restore your smile. It also prevents nearby teeth from drifting into the open space, which can lead to bite problems over time.
While a dental bridge is a reliable option, it does have some drawbacks compared to dental implants. A bridge requires reshaping the healthy teeth on either side of the gap so crowns can be placed. It also does not protect against bone loss in the jaw, which often happens when teeth are missing. For many patients, dental implants are a longer-lasting solution since they replace the tooth root as well as the crown.
