What Disqualifies You From Veneers?

What Disqualifies You From Veneers?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

Veneers are a powerful way to transform your smile — but they’re not the right fit for everyone. So, what disqualifies someone from getting veneers? The answer usually comes down to oral health, bite issues, or habits that could affect how well the veneers hold up over time.

Here are a few reasons you might not be a good candidate for veneers — at least not right away:

1. Active Tooth Decay or Gum Disease

If you have untreated cavities or gum problems, those need to be addressed first. Veneers are cosmetic, so they must be placed on healthy teeth and gums to be safe and successful.

2. Severe Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

If you grind or clench your teeth regularly, especially at night, you risk chipping or damaging your veneers. In some cases, we can still move forward with a custom nightguard to protect your veneers — but we’ll talk through that carefully during your consult.

3. Very Misaligned or Crowded Teeth

Veneers can correct mild alignment issues, but if your teeth are severely crooked or overlapping, you may need orthodontic treatment (like clear aligners) before veneers can be placed properly.

4. Weak or Insufficient Enamel

Veneers bond to your tooth’s enamel, so if you’ve lost too much enamel due to erosion, grinding, or past dental work, it may not be safe to place a veneer — though other options like crowns or implant restorations might be available.

5. Unrealistic Expectations

Veneers are amazing — but they’re not magic. If someone is looking for a “perfect Hollywood smile” that doesn’t match their natural features, we’ll always aim for a result that looks beautiful and believable.

At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we’ll do a full evaluation and give you honest feedback about what’s possible. And remember — we’re a no-judgment office. Whether veneers are right for you or not, we’ll guide you with compassion and clear options to help you love your smile.
