What Are the Three Types of Dental Implants?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Patients often ask me, “What are the three types of dental implants?” Dental implants are the most advanced way to replace missing teeth, but not every implant is the same. Knowing the main types can help you understand your options and choose the treatment that fits your needs best.
The first and most common type is the endosteal implant. These are placed directly into the jawbone and act like natural tooth roots. Once healed, they can support a crown, bridge, or even a full denture. Endosteal implants are the gold standard because they are strong, long-lasting, and feel very natural. Most patients who get implants receive this type.
The second type is the subperiosteal implant. These rest on top of the jawbone but under the gums. They are used for patients who do not have enough healthy bone for traditional implants and who may not want to go through bone grafting. While they are less common today thanks to modern grafting techniques, they can still be an option in special cases.
The third type is the zygomatic implant. These are much longer implants that anchor into the cheekbone, or zygoma, instead of the upper jaw. They are used when the upper jaw has lost too much bone and cannot hold regular implants. Zygomatic implants are more complex, but they allow patients who might otherwise be told “no” to still enjoy the benefits of dental implants.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I have advanced training that allows me to place all types of implants, from single teeth to full-arch solutions. I also use 3D imaging, zero bone loss principles, and custom healing abutments to improve long-term success. And with options like oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia with an MD anesthesiologist, patients can feel completely comfortable during treatment.
I also want you to know that my office is a no judgment zone. Whether you lost teeth years ago or just recently, my goal is to help you move forward with a healthy, confident smile.
So, what are the three types of dental implants? Endosteal, subperiosteal, and zygomatic. Each has a role, and the right one depends on your unique needs.
