What Are the Disadvantages of Using Implants?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Many patients ask me, “What are the disadvantages of using implants?” Dental implants are one of the best ways to replace missing teeth, but like any treatment, they do have a few drawbacks to consider. My goal is always to give you clear, honest information so you can decide what’s right for you.
The first disadvantage is cost. Dental implants usually cost more up front than dentures or bridges. A single implant can cost several thousand dollars, and a full set of implants is a bigger investment. However, implants often last decades, which can save money over time by avoiding replacements and repairs.
The second drawback is healing time. After implants are placed, they need several months to bond with the bone before the permanent teeth can be attached. For some patients, this means wearing temporary teeth during the healing process. At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use techniques like immediate placement and custom healing abutments to speed recovery and preserve your gums and bone whenever possible.
Another consideration is that implants require surgery. Like any surgery, there are small risks such as infection, discomfort, or implant failure. Patients with health issues like uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking may have higher risks. With my advanced training in implants and the use of 3D imaging for precise planning, these risks are kept very low.
Finally, implants require good home care. Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups are important to keep the gums and bone healthy. While implants do not get cavities, they can develop problems if plaque is not removed. At my office, I use highly polished zirconia abutments to reduce plaque buildup and increase the longevity of your implants.
It’s also important to know that my office is a no judgment zone. Whether you’ve gone years without dental care or lost teeth from decay or injury, I’m here to help you move forward—not to lecture you.
So, while implants have some disadvantages—mainly cost, healing time, and the need for surgery—their long-term benefits often outweigh these challenges. If you want to know whether implants are right for you, schedule a consultation at Summerbrook Dental & Implants in Fort Worth. Together, we’ll find the best plan to restore your smile, comfort, and confidence.
