Patients often ask me, “What are mini implants?” Mini dental implants are a smaller version of traditional implants. They are designed to replace missing teeth or to stabilize dentures when there isn’t enough bone for full-sized implants. Mini implants can be a great option for patients who want more security than dentures but may not be ready for full implant treatment.
A traditional dental implant is usually about the width of a pencil. A mini implant is much thinner, closer to the width of a toothpick. Because they are smaller, mini implants can often be placed without as much surgery, and in some cases, they can be used right away to support a denture. This means patients may leave the office the same day with a more stable smile.
Mini implants are often used for patients who have lost bone in the jaw and do not want a bone graft. They are commonly placed in the lower jaw to stabilize a denture, keeping it from slipping or moving. The denture can then “snap” onto the mini implants for a much more secure fit compared to adhesives alone.
