What Age Should You Not Get Implants?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
A question I often hear is, “What age should you not get implants?” Many patients worry they may be too old for this treatment. The truth is, there is no upper age limit for dental implants. I routinely place implants for patients in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s. What matters most is your overall health and bone strength, not your age.
Dental implants are small posts placed into the jawbone to act like natural roots. They support crowns, bridges, or dentures and are designed to last for decades. For older adults who struggle with loose dentures or missing teeth, implants can be life-changing. They allow you to chew better, protect your jawbone from shrinking, and give you back a natural-looking smile.
The one time implants are not recommended based on age is in teenagers or younger patients whose jaws have not finished growing. In those cases, we wait until the jawbone is fully developed before placing implants. For adults, even in later years, implants can almost always be an option with proper planning.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use advanced 3D imaging to measure bone and design a safe, precise plan. If bone has thinned over time, procedures like bone grafting or a sinus lift can rebuild the foundation for implants. I also follow zero bone loss principles and use custom healing abutments to protect gum and bone health for better long-term results.
Your comfort is just as important. We offer oral sedation, IV sedation, and even general anesthesia with an MD anesthesiologist so you can feel relaxed during treatment. And please know, there is no judgment here. Whether you lost teeth recently or decades ago, my focus is on helping you move forward with confidence.
So, what age should you not get implants? Other than children and teens who are still growing, there really is no age cutoff. If you are healthy enough for dental treatment, you are likely a good candidate. If you want to know if implants are right for you, schedule a consultation at Summerbrook Dental & Implants in Fort Worth. Together, we can create a plan that restores your smile, comfort, and confidence—at any age.
