Is a White Filling Better Than Silver?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
When you get a cavity, your dentist will remove the decay and fill the space with a dental filling. The two most common types are white fillings (composite resin) and silver fillings (amalgam). Many patients ask me, “Is a white filling better than silver?” The answer depends on your needs, but white fillings have some clear advantages.
White fillings are made from a tooth-colored resin that blends in with your natural teeth. This makes them almost invisible, so they are the best choice for front teeth or other visible areas. They bond directly to your tooth, which means less drilling and more of your natural tooth can be saved. White fillings also don’t expand and contract as much as silver fillings when exposed to hot or cold, which can help protect your tooth over time.
Silver fillings have been used for decades. They are strong and long-lasting, especially for back teeth where the bite force is greater. However, they can be more noticeable because of their dark color. Over time, silver fillings may also cause small cracks in teeth due to temperature changes and metal expansion.
In my office, I use white fillings most often because patients prefer a natural look and the bonding technology works well for many cases. However, there are times when a silver filling may be the better option, such as for large cavities in molars that need extra strength.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we always explain your choices and help you decide what’s right for your mouth, your budget, and your long-term dental health. We are a no-judgment office, so you can feel comfortable asking questions and learning about all your options.
