Is 60 Too Old for Dental Implants?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
One of the most common questions I hear is, “Is 60 too old for dental implants?” The simple answer is no. Age by itself is not a barrier to getting implants. What matters most is your overall health, bone strength, and goals for your smile.
Dental implants are small posts placed into the jawbone that act like natural roots. They support crowns, bridges, or dentures and are designed to last for many years. At age 60 and beyond, many patients are missing teeth or wearing dentures, and implants can provide a permanent, stable solution. In fact, a large percentage of my implant patients are in their 60s, 70s, or even 80s.
The main factor we look at is bone health. After teeth are lost, the jawbone naturally shrinks over time. If there is not enough bone, we may need to add bone through a graft or sinus lift before placing implants. With today’s technology, these procedures are very predictable and allow patients of all ages to enjoy the benefits of implants.
Your overall health is also important. Conditions like diabetes or smoking can affect healing, but they do not automatically rule out implants. With proper planning, many patients with medical conditions can still be excellent candidates. At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use 3D imaging and advanced surgical techniques to design a custom plan that gives you the best chance for success.
I also want you to know that there is no judgment here. Whether you have lived with missing teeth for years or struggled with dentures, my role is not to lecture but to help you move forward with confidence. With my advanced training in implant dentistry and our full range of sedation options, including oral, IV, and general anesthesia with an MD anesthesiologist, we can make the process comfortable and stress-free.
So, is 60 too old for dental implants? Absolutely not. Implants can restore your ability to chew, protect your jawbone, and give you back a natural-looking smile—at any age.
