How Many Years Does It Take to Become a Cosmetic Dentist?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

Becoming a cosmetic dentist starts the same way as becoming any general dentist — with a lot of education, training, and dedication. While there’s no official degree called “cosmetic dentistry,” most cosmetic dentists complete at least 8 years of education and hands-on training before they ever start practicing.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical path:

  1. 4 years of undergraduate studies – Usually with a focus on science courses like biology and chemistry.

  2. 4 years of dental school – This is where dentists earn their DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine).

  3. Additional cosmetic training – After dental school, many dentists choose to take continuing education courses focused on cosmetic procedures like veneers, smile design, bonding, whitening, clear aligners, and full smile makeovers.

Some dentists may also take part in advanced training programs, residencies, or certification courses through organizations like the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). While these aren’t required to practice cosmetic dentistry, they show a commitment to excellence and ongoing learning.

At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I’ve completed extensive post-graduate training in cosmetic and surgical procedures. That means you can get most or all of your treatment done right here in our office, without needing to be referred to multiple specialists.

And remember, we’re a no-judgment office. Whether you’re ready to explore cosmetic options or just starting to get back on track with your dental care, we’ll meet you with kindness, respect, and the expert care you deserve.

So while it takes years to become a cosmetic dentist, the result is someone who’s trained not just to keep your mouth healthy — but to help you love your smile again.
