How Many Appointments Would Be Needed for Dental Implants?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
If you are thinking about replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant, one of the first questions you may have is, “How many appointments will I need?” The exact number depends on your situation, but I’ll walk you through what most patients can expect.
The first step is a consultation appointment. At this visit, I examine your mouth, take X-rays or 3D scans, and talk with you about your goals. This is when we decide if an implant is the right option and whether you need extra steps, like bone grafting.
The next step is the implant placement appointment. This is when the titanium implant post is placed into your jawbone. For a single implant, the procedure usually takes about an hour. If you are having multiple implants or a full arch of implants, it may take longer. Most patients feel comfortable with just local anesthesia, but we also offer sedation for those who prefer to be more relaxed.
After the implant is placed, the healing phase begins. It takes about 3 to 6 months for the implant to fully fuse with the bone. During this time, you may have a quick follow-up appointment or two so I can check your healing.
Once the implant is stable, you return for the abutment appointment. The abutment is a small connector that attaches to the implant and holds the crown. Sometimes, this step can be done at the same time as the implant placement, but other times it is a separate visit.
Finally, you’ll have the crown appointment. At this visit, I attach the permanent crown that has been custom-made to match your other teeth. This is the exciting part—you leave with a natural-looking, fully functioning tooth.
So, in total, most patients need 3 to 5 appointments spread out over several months. If bone grafting or other procedures are needed, there may be additional visits.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we are a no-judgment office. My team and I explain each step clearly, so you always know what to expect. Our goal is to make the process smooth and stress-free while giving you a strong, lasting smile.
