How Long Does It Take for the Implant to Work?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
If you are thinking about getting dental implants, one of the most common questions you might have is, “How long does it take for the implant to work?” Dental implants are an excellent way to replace missing teeth, but they do take time to heal before they can be used like natural teeth.
A dental implant works by fusing with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This means the implant post, which is usually made of titanium, becomes part of the bone. Once this happens, the implant is strong enough to support a crown, bridge, or denture. But the timeline for this healing process can vary from person to person.
For most patients, it takes about 3 to 6 months for an implant to fully bond with the bone. In some cases, if the bone is very strong and healthy, it may heal faster. If you needed a bone graft before the implant, healing can take longer—sometimes 6 to 9 months in total.
During the healing phase, many patients are given a temporary tooth so they don’t have to go without a smile. Once the implant is stable, we place the final crown or restoration, and that is when the implant is ready to “work” like a natural tooth.
It’s important to understand that while waiting may feel slow, this time is crucial for long-term success. Rushing the process could lead to failure or problems with the implant. By giving your body time to heal, you set yourself up for a strong and lasting result.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use advanced 3D imaging and careful planning to make the process as smooth as possible. We are also a no-judgment office, which means we meet you where you are—whether you’ve been missing teeth for months or years. Our goal is to help you get back to eating, smiling, and living with confidence.
If you are considering implants, remember that while the healing process takes a few months, the results can last a lifetime. It’s a worthwhile investment in your health and quality of life.
