How Long Do Fillings Last?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have cavities or small cracks. Many patients ask, “How long will my filling last?” The answer depends on the type of filling, your oral habits, and how well you care for your teeth.

Most fillings last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. Silver (amalgam) fillings tend to last longer—often closer to the 10–15 year range—because they are very strong. Tooth-colored (composite) fillings usually last around 5–10 years but can still last longer with good care.

However, these are just averages. Some fillings wear out sooner, while others last decades. Factors that can shorten the life of a filling include grinding your teeth, chewing ice or hard candy, and poor oral hygiene. Fillings can also fail if new decay forms around them.

To make your fillings last as long as possible, brush twice a day, floss daily, and visit your dentist regularly. During checkups at Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we carefully examine your fillings to make sure they are still in good shape. We may take X-rays to check underneath the filling for any hidden decay.

It’s important to replace worn or damaged fillings quickly. If a filling cracks or falls out, bacteria can get inside the tooth, leading to bigger problems like infection or the need for a crown or root canal.

In my office, we make sure your fillings are placed with precision so they last as long as possible. We are also a no-judgment office, so if you haven’t had a checkup in years, we’re here to help, not lecture.

With proper care, your fillings can serve you well for many years, protecting your teeth and keeping your smile healthy.
