How Do I Know If I’m Allergic to My Implants?

Some patients ask me, “How do I know if I’m allergic to my implants?” While true allergies to dental implants are rare, it is possible. Most dental implants are made from titanium or zirconia, both of which are very safe and used in many medical devices. However, a small number of people may have a sensitivity or allergic reaction to certain metals.

Signs of a possible allergy to an implant can include ongoing pain, swelling, redness, burning sensations, or loosening of the implant that does not improve after normal healing time. You might also notice unusual gum irritation or a metallic taste. These symptoms can also be caused by infection or other dental issues, so it’s important not to assume it’s an allergy without testing.

If you think you may be allergic, the first step is to talk to your dentist. At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I review your symptoms, check the implant site, and may refer you for allergy or patch testing. This can confirm whether you have a reaction to titanium, zirconia, or other materials.

If an allergy is confirmed, treatment may involve removing the implant and replacing it with a different material—such as a ceramic (zirconia) implant—that your body tolerates better. The good news is that alternative implant options exist, so you can still restore your smile safely.

We are a no-judgment office, and my goal is to help you find the solution that works best for your health and comfort. If you notice any unusual symptoms after implant surgery, don’t ignore them—early action can make all the difference.
