Does Anyone Actually Use Dental Dams?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Many people have heard the term “dental dam” but wonder, does anyone actually use them? The answer is yes—dentists use dental dams often, especially during certain treatments.
A dental dam is a thin sheet, usually made of latex or a latex-free material, that covers the mouth area around the tooth being worked on. It leaves just the treatment area exposed. This keeps the tooth clean and dry, prevents bacteria from getting in, and stops small tools or materials from going into the mouth or throat.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I use dental dams mainly during root canals. They help keep the tooth free from saliva so we can clean and seal it properly. Dental dams can also be used for certain fillings, crown work, and other detailed dental procedures.
Some patients worry about breathing with a dental dam, but you can still breathe comfortably through your nose. If you have nasal issues or anxiety about it, we can talk through options before starting. Our team is trained to make sure you are safe and comfortable the entire time.
While dental dams are not used for every procedure, they are an important tool in modern dentistry. They help reduce the risk of infection, improve the quality of the dental work, and keep patients safer.
At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we are a no-judgment office. We take time to explain why we use certain tools, including dental dams, and how they help give you the best result. If you ever have questions or concerns, we encourage you to ask—we are here to help you feel informed and at ease.
Yes, dental dams are still used, and they play an important role in keeping dental treatment clean, safe, and effective.
