Do They Put You to Sleep for a Root Canal?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX
Many patients ask me, “Do they put you to sleep for a root canal?” The simple answer is usually no. Most root canals are done with local anesthesia, which means we numb the tooth and surrounding area so you do not feel pain during the procedure. You stay awake the whole time, but the tooth is completely numb.
A root canal has a bad reputation for being painful, but in reality, modern dental techniques make it comfortable for most patients. The goal is to remove the infection, save your tooth, and get you out of pain. In many cases, people feel relief right away after treatment.
For patients who feel nervous or have dental anxiety, there are sedation options. At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, we can offer oral sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax during the procedure. These methods do not put you fully to sleep but make you feel calm and less aware of the treatment.
If you need or prefer to be fully asleep, this would require general anesthesia, which is typically done with the help of an MD anesthesiologist for safety. General anesthesia is not common for root canals but may be used for patients with extreme anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or special medical needs.
We are a no-judgment office, so whether you are calm or anxious, we will work with you to find the option that makes you the most comfortable. Our priority is to make sure you have a pain-free and stress-free experience while protecting your oral health.
If you need a root canal or have questions about sedation, give us a call. We can explain your options and help you choose the best approach for you.
