Can You Become a Dentist in 2 Years?

Can You Become a Dentist in 2 Years?
By Dr. Eastwood – Summerbrook Dental & Implants, Fort Worth, TX

The short answer is no — you cannot become a fully licensed dentist in just 2 years. Becoming a dentist takes time, education, and hands-on clinical training to ensure you’re fully prepared to care for patients safely and effectively. In the United States, the process usually takes at least 8 years after high school.

Here’s the typical path:

  1. 4 years of undergraduate studies – Most future dentists earn a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field like biology or chemistry.

  2. 4 years of dental school – After undergrad, students attend dental school to earn their DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree.

That’s already 8 years total, and some dentists go on to complete additional training or residency programs in specialties like oral surgery, orthodontics, or cosmetic dentistry.

There are no shortcuts to becoming a dentist in 2 years, but there are programs to become a dental assistant or dental hygienist in a shorter amount of time. These are great careers in the dental field and can often be completed in 1–2 years, depending on the program.

At Summerbrook Dental & Implants, I completed all the required education and have also taken advanced training in cosmetic and surgical procedures, which allows us to offer comprehensive care in one office. Whether you need a routine checkup or a full smile makeover, you’re in expert hands.
