One of the most common questions we hear is, “Are cosmetic dentists covered by insurance?” The short answer is: it depends on the type of treatment and the reason it’s being done.
In general, most cosmetic dental procedures are not covered by insurance because they are considered elective — meaning they’re done to improve the appearance of your smile, not to treat pain, disease, or a functional problem. Treatments like teeth whitening, veneers, and smile makeovers are usually paid out of pocket.
However, there are some gray areas, and this is where it helps to have a dentist who understands both cosmetic and restorative care. If a treatment improves your smile and also restores function, insurance may help cover part of the cost. For example, if you need a crown to protect a damaged tooth but also want it to look natural and beautiful, your insurance might pay for the crown (even though it has cosmetic benefits).
